How to Add Tail Lights to Your Scale Model Truck

If you're building or detailing a scale model truck, one of the most satisfying finishing touches is a set of realistic tail lights. Whether you're modelling an Australian road train, a Kenworth, a Western Star, or a classic White truck, the right tail lights can take your build from good to show-stopping.

In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about adding tail lights to your scale model truck — from choosing the right style to fitting them like a pro.

Why Tail Lights Matter on a Scale Model Truck

Scale modelling is all about the details. Tail lights are one of the most visible features on a real truck, and getting them right on your model makes a huge difference to realism. Judges at model shows and collectors alike notice when the lighting is accurate and well-fitted.

For Australian and New Zealand modellers, this is especially important — our road trains and heavy haulage trucks are iconic, and the lighting rigs on these vehicles are a big part of their character.

Choosing the Right Tail Lights for Your Scale Model

Before you start, you need to decide which style of tail light suits your build. Here are the main options available for scale model trucks:

Classic Tail Lights

The Classic Tail Lights – Scale Model Trucks are the go-to choice for modellers building vintage or traditional Australian truck builds. These replicate the look of the classic round or rectangular tail lights you'd see on older Kenworths, Whites, and other iconic rigs. They're perfect for 1/24 and 1/25 scale builds and are designed to fit neatly without modification.

If you want a combination light (tail, brake, and indicator in one unit), the Classic Combination Tail Lights are an excellent choice — they give you that authentic multi-function look in a single, clean fitting.

JUMBO LED Tail Lights

For a more modern, high-visibility look — or if you're modelling a contemporary Australian B-double or road train — the JUMBO LED Tail Lights are hard to beat. These are larger-format lights that replicate the big, bold LED clusters you see on modern heavy vehicles on Australian highways.

Want the full lighting package? The JUMBO LED Combination Tail Lights combine tail, brake, and indicator functions, while the JUMBO LED Park Brake Lights add that extra layer of detail for serious builders. You can even add a JUMBO LED Trailer Lights Pack to complete the full rig.

Step-by-Step: Fitting Tail Lights to Your Scale Model Truck

Step 1 – Plan Your Placement

Before gluing anything, dry-fit your tail lights to check positioning. On most 1/24 and 1/25 scale trucks, tail lights sit on the rear corners of the cab or on the rear of the trailer. Reference photos of the real truck you're modelling to get the placement right.

Step 2 – Prepare the Surface

Lightly sand the mounting area with fine-grit sandpaper (400–600 grit) to give the adhesive something to grip. Wipe away any dust with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 3 – Apply Adhesive

Use a small amount of plastic-compatible super glue or modelling cement. Apply it to the back of the tail light fitting, not the model body — this gives you more control. For resin or metal fittings, a two-part epoxy gives a stronger bond.

Step 4 – Press and Hold

Press the tail light firmly into position and hold for 30–60 seconds. Use masking tape to hold it in place while the adhesive fully cures — usually 10–15 minutes for super glue, longer for epoxy.

Step 5 – Touch Up and Detail

Once the adhesive has cured, use a fine brush to touch up any paint around the fitting. A tiny dot of clear red or amber paint on the lens can add extra realism. For LED-style lights, a wash of dark grey or black around the housing helps them look recessed and realistic.

Tips for Australian Modellers

  • Reference real trucks: Australian road trains often run multiple tail light clusters — don't be afraid to use several sets on a long trailer build.
  • Check your scale: Our tail lights are designed for 1/24 and 1/25 scale, with some options for 1/50 scale. Always check the product listing before ordering.
  • Mix and match: Combine classic and JUMBO styles on different parts of a rig for a realistic, layered look.
  • Shipping to NZ: We ship to New Zealand — so Kiwi modellers can get the same great products delivered to their door.
