Complete Guide to Scale Model Truck Mud Flaps
Mud flaps might seem like a small detail, but any serious scale model truck builder knows they make a massive difference to the finished look of a rig. Whether you're building a Kenworth, Western Star, CAT, or International, the right mud flaps add authenticity and that unmistakable "working truck" character to your model.
This guide covers everything Australian and New Zealand modellers need to know about scale model truck mud flaps — from choosing the right brand and scale to fitting them perfectly on your build.
Why Mud Flaps Are Essential for Realistic Truck Models
On real Australian trucks, mud flaps are a legal requirement and a practical necessity — they protect other road users from debris thrown up by the tyres. On a scale model, they serve a different purpose: they signal that your build is detailed, researched, and finished to a high standard.
Mud flaps also carry branding. Real trucks often run mud flaps with the manufacturer's logo, the owner's company name, or iconic trucking brands. Replicating this on your model is a great way to add personality and story to your build.

What Scale Are These Mud Flaps?
Most of our mud flaps are designed for 1/24 and 1/25 scale model trucks — the most popular scales for detailed truck modelling in Australia and New Zealand. These scales are used by major kit manufacturers including Revell, AMT, and Italeri.

How to Fit Mud Flaps on Your Scale Model Truck
Step 1 – Identify Mounting Points
On most 1/24 and 1/25 scale truck kits, mud flaps mount behind the rear axle(s) and sometimes behind the front axle. Reference photos of the real truck you're modelling to confirm the correct positions.
Step 2 – Trim to Fit if Needed
Depending on your kit and the specific truck configuration, you may need to trim the mud flaps slightly. Use sharp scissors or a hobby knife and a cutting mat. Always cut a little at a time — you can always take more off, but you can't put it back!
Step 3 – Attach with Adhesive
Apply a small amount of plastic-compatible super glue or modelling cement to the top edge of the mud flap (the mounting bracket area). Press firmly against the chassis or body and hold for 30–60 seconds. Masking tape can help hold the flap in position while the glue cures.
Step 4 – Check Alignment
Before the adhesive fully sets, check that the mud flap hangs straight and sits at the correct angle. A slight inward angle (matching the real truck) looks more realistic than a perfectly vertical flap.
Step 5 – Weather and Detail
For a used, working-truck look, apply a light wash of brown or grey paint to the lower portion of the mud flap to simulate road grime. A dry-brush of light grey or silver on the edges adds wear and realism.
Tips for Australian Truck Modellers
- Road trains need more flaps: If you're building a multi-trailer road train, you'll need mud flaps on each trailer unit — stock up with multiple sets.
- Mix brands: Real Australian trucks sometimes run different branded flaps on different axles. Mixing sets can add a realistic, "owner-operator" feel to your build.
- Custom flaps for show models: If you're entering a model show, custom mud flaps with your own design are a guaranteed talking point.
- We ship to New Zealand: Kiwi modellers can order directly from us with delivery to NZ.
